Embracing the Entrepreneurial Journey in Security Consulting
Stepping into the entrepreneurial world, I’m both excited and humbled to share my experience of starting my own security consulting business. Transitioning from the nine-to-five life has its challenges, but it also opens incredible opportunities. As much confidence as I have in my own abilities in my field, I quickly realized there’s just as much—if not more—that I don’t know about running a business. Being my own boss is great until I realize that I should know more about accounting; now I must open that old textbook like it’s the first day of school again. Oof.
When I first decided to take the leap, I found myself oddly motivated. It was the first time I had felt that doing what I loved for a job, without a boss, was possible. However, I quickly realized that entrepreneurship requires a whole new set of tools.
Building a business from the ground up is a rollercoaster. Some days are filled with confidence and clarity, while others are a struggle against self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and uncertainty. I’ve spent hours researching the market, networking with fellow entrepreneurs, and fine-tuning my services. The learning curve is steep, and every day presents a new challenge. None of it would be possible without the help and support of others.
What keeps me going is my passion for safeguarding others—not just physically, but in helping them feel confident in their own abilities. Knowing I can apply my experience to help them create safe spaces for individuals and organizations is incredibly motivating.
I’m grateful for the support from fellow veterans and the broader community. The camaraderie and shared goals remind me that every entrepreneur has been where I am today, and many more will come after.
To anyone on the brink of following their passion—whether you're a veteran or not—embrace the journey. Acknowledge the ups and downs and remember that everyone struggles. Everyone has bad days and good days; things usually take a lot longer than you may think, and investing in yourself is worth ten times the price you paid.
In walks *Security LLC* by Meb West, a 530-page softcover masterpiece. “The Entrepreneur’s Comprehensive Blueprint for Launching and Running a Thriving Consulting Business”—this book is exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it. I had hit a wall. My brain was stagnant, and I had no idea where to take my business. This book got my ball rolling. It created momentum that hasn’t stopped.
Since Meb is a former instructor of mine, I reached out to say “Hi” and express how much I enjoyed his book. Meb then introduced me to his networking page for the *Security LLC* book. Through that networking group, I have met other new entrepreneurs and gained access to an incredible wealth of knowledge. If that isn’t enough, Meb offers one-on-one “coach-sulting,” as he calls it. I am currently halfway through the program and cannot recommend it enough. The program is tailored to meet your needs and allows you to control the topics. Meb goes to great lengths to help as much as he can. He will, of course, not do the work for you, but he guides you with the knowledge and experience of an industry leader.
Anyone who knows me personally will vouch for me when I say that I will not put my name on something that I don’t believe in or support 100%. If you are starting a security consulting business and don’t have a Harvard Business degree or attend the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, then you need this book, *Security LLC*, and Meb’s coaching program.
